D Brooks’ role

Meanwhile, and back to the Dillon Brooks thing, I don't see him being part of the Memphis Grizzlies after this season. I can't see us investing in a player for another 3-5 years when it's tough watching him play basketball now.

Sure hope they have some idea for replacing his perimeter defense if/when he is gone.

He fouls to much, we can replace him.

He’s not irreplaceable

Y’all tripping.

 I’m riding with Dillon.

loyalty counts … and I’m selfish- I want to win WITH MY GUYS … I rock with good Dillon and bad Dillon - and all that comes with it.

culture, right?

Can’t cough when we asked for the smoking section. This that smoke.

I can live with the DB experience.   What i can't live with is seeing us take these same offense and defense strategies into the PostSeason.

Everything i pointed out in my rant about our schemes was super exposed by the Kings last night.

  • Didn't run sets to get Bane easy looks from 3.
  • Run and Chuck offense
  • Overhelping Defense leaving shooters open
  • No PG lineup and weird lineups
  • Not leaving the hothand in but instead doing the rotations by spreadsheet clock

I am telling ya'll a trade isn't fixing those issues.   Our schemes need to be adjusted.  Teams have figured us out.

Teams haven't figured out the Grizzlies any more than teams have figured out the Celtics, Warriors or Bucks. The Grizzlies lost two games they played poorly in by a total of 3 points and then got blown out in the 2nd half against the Kings playing their 3rd game in 4 nights spread between LA, Phoenix and Sacramento.

Let's settle down. The team just won 11 games in a row and suddenly teams have figured the Grizzlies out and they won't win a game in the playoffs unless the team completely overhauls their offense and defense? Get a grip. Is it more logical that the team is just missing open shots and playing poorly on the road against teams or that suddenly after 11 straight wins the Grizzlies have been figured out?

Or you can see that our 11 win strict was mostly at home against inferior competition or good teams missing players.     You can also ignore the fact that Sabonis told his teammates to exploit our defense successfully and we got routed.     You can continue pretending that our lack of halfcourt offense and leaving 3pt shooters WIIIDE open isnt a problem too.   Brevin calls it out every game, but i guess he needs to just shut up and smell the roses huh!

At some point you may realize criticisms after poor performances are warranted.   We've had 3 poor performances in a row.  Kings shot freaking 55% from 3 and Suns were at 37% LAL fell to 31% over course of game, but they are an awful shooting team.

Grizz Org said they are going for championship.  If that is the goal then we will have to go thru several teams that are proficient at shooting deep ball ( SAC, PHO, GSW, DEN, BOS).   One is right to be concerned when shooting and defending 3s is our weakness.

You can keep on smoking whatever Jenkins is smoking when he continues to say after every loss " shots just weren't falling".   I prefer to actually observe and analyze what actually happened on the court.

The Grizzlies have the 3rd best record in the NBA. Third. This road trip is a beast that would challenge any team. I do expect more from the team but it's hard to win on the road in the NBA. The first two games the Grizzlies played bad (especially in the Lakers game where all they had to do was hold onto the ball at the end of the game to win). Last night was a schedule loss (3 games in 4 days with a lot of travel in between especially going from Phoenix after a hard fought game to Sacramento).

I believe some people love to create unneeded drama to build up a false narrative. I don't know how the team will do in the playoffs but I hope they don't try and change everything offensively and defensively right now. That would be beyond idiotic in my opinion.

This five game road trip is a beast, made harder by the team's poor performance in LA. Hopefully they will get some rest and play better against Golden State (they owe them a better game).

Oh the same GSW team without Steph that exploited our overhelping defense and blitzed us from 3 on Xmas???

I believe some people love to think they are the "thought police" and think ppl need their approval before stating concerns.

The concern isn't about just this roadtrip.  It is about what this roadtrip is exposing will be a problem for us in the playoffs.   These losses aren't against Eastern teams.  These losses are against potential matchups.

Yes, we do help a lot on defense and give up a lot of 3's.  We rank 22nd in the league giving up 13 made 3's a game.  But we also rank 4th in the league only giving up 27.4 made 2s a game and first in the league in overall DRtg.  So yes hot shooting 3 point shooters can expose us from time to time but I don't think defense is our major concern.  It could obviously always be better but we are the best defense so far this season.

Our main issue is our offense.  We just don't score that efficiently.  We rank 27th in the league in true shooting percentage and 20th in assist ratio.  Our offense just doesn't have a good flow to it.  Too much isolation and ball stopping and just bad shooting (especially free throws).  If you want to criticize the coaching staff I think that is where their issue lies and not with our defensive strategy.

IHMO the defense only becomes an issue when TJ is too slow to adjust to the opponent.   He would rather gamble on the opponent eventually missing shots than adjust to the game situation.   Bucks ran very similar defensive scheme they recently adjusted it to not allow so many open 3s.    Its time for TJ to adjust as well because teams are relying more and more on 3s as big part of their offense.  A scheme that allows your opponent to shoot more of them isn't gonna keep working.

I totally agree with you about our offense and even the stats back that up.   Seems like they sometimes don't know how to just slowdown and run a set to get a good shot when offense is bleeding.   Instead they think going even faster and chucking more is the solution to every problem.  Adams alone is simply way too integral to our offense now.   Without him it seems like they are no easy buckets outside of transition.  That is a major problem for a team with Championship aspirations.

It's a good point, and the 3rd game in 4 nights we also didn't have our MVP candidate or Adams, who is incredibly important.

Not worried at all. Just need to have a little rest and getting Adams and Ja healthy.

Let's put to bed some of these silly concerns. The Grizzlies are 7th in the league in scoring. The Grizzlies are #1 in the league in Defensive FG% . The Grizzlies are #1 in rebounding. #5 in steals per game.. #2 in Blocks per game (despite Jaren missing a long stint at the start of the season). It doesn't seem that Defense or Offense is a real weakness of the team.

So where do the Grizzlies stack up poorly?

The Grizzlies are DEAD LAST in FT% at 71.2%. The second worst team is at 74.2%. That's three percentage points lower than the second to worst team in the league. The Grizzlies missed 14 FTs against LA and lost by one point. The Grizzlies missed 8 FTs against Phoenix and lost by 2 points. I sincerely doubt anyone would be saying teams figured out the Grizzlies if they made their FT's in those games.

The Grizzlies are 21st in the league in 3 point percentage. That is the bottom third of the league. Of course, Jaren's missed time and Desmond's missed time and Ziaire has missed time. They are expected to be some of the Grizzlies best 3 point shooters. It's bad but it isn't terribly bad. I also don't believe the poor shooting is a scheme (i.e. coaching) issue. They are getting good lucks they just aren't sinking them often enough.

If anyone wants to criticize the team (and clearly some people do) then ask why Jenkins doesn't have the team working more on FTs.

another 17 shots last night from db.

over the last 9 games, he’s shooting 13 times on average. I see a problem with that. 40 of 114.

hitting 35% of those shots.

slim.

And his opponents know it on the scouting reports. He can shoot unless it’s a high volume of shots.

Agree.

I think teams are playing "i dare you to shoot" defence when it comes to Dillon. And he doesn't disappoint them with his response :)

Dillon has fully transformed himself into Tony Allen 3.0.   During GnG era we all had same discussions about Tony's impact and weaknesses.    His defense was so elite that he was always a plus on the court.  However, his offense was so bad that it actively prevented us from modernizing our offense with more shooting.

Key difference is that Tony also recognized his offense was bad; so he willingly accepted his role as low usage offensive player that got the ball to better offensive players.   Plus Tony had Coaches that gladly reminded him that he should never be taking 3s.

In great contrast; Dillon has zero self-awareness and a Coach that seemingly encourages him to fire away.  'We have been having this discussion about Dillon' shot selection and inefficiency for 4 yrs it think its safe to say he isn't gonna change.  Especially on this team where there are no voices on bench or on court that will force him too.

We all know his role should be 4th option in starting lineup but primarily focusing on defending best opposing player.  Not sure if we will ever get that fully from him tho.

Dillon is actually worse off the ball than TA.  He shoots bettee than TA but isnt that good at catch and shoot unless he is wide wide open.  But TA had a knack for cutting and could sniff out offensive rebounds or loose balls.  Dillon not so much.

True he just mirrors the same conundrum as being more valuable to us then he would to another team in a trade.   Even down to the fact that he is considered the "heart" of the team.   Seems like its gonna be hard to have offense get better if he still chucking shots.

Why doesn’t he have them working on FTs since they are so important!

A lot of games could be won at the Charity Stripe!    This is nothing new or a rocket science project.   Ever since Little League Basketball free throws are important.

What makes you think he doesn't?  BTW we shot 90.5% from the line last night.

It is rare for an NBA vet of a couple seasons to significantly improve his free throw shooting.  I think that is extremely naive to think that the coaches can just have the team work on free throw shooting and expect improvement.  Our free throw shooting is what it is for most of our players.  Maybe some of the young guys can make some improvement but they aren't the ones causing our poor free throw shooting.  Ja, BC  and Adams are the main culprits.  Those guys aren't improving much beyond the normal variation from game to game and season to season.  (Adams is shooting well below his career average so certainly we can expect some reversion to the mean from him).

What coaches can do however is try to figure out ways to improve the flow of our half-court offense.   We rank 23rd in the league in eFG%.  We rank 22nd in the league in points per possession after a made shot.  There is a lot our coaches CAN do to make our team better through better game planning and offensive strategy.  They can't do much about our poor free throw shooting except bench the main offenders, who happen also to be our best players.

11 shots last night for dbrooks, so I guess that is better than his current trend of 13 shots per game.

problem was he only hit 2 of those 11. (that is, hide your eyes, 18% from the field).

slim.
