D Brooks’ role

Recommended Posts

We know that Taylor likes his players to have confidence in their shooting and not create doubt in them, so he constantly gives players the green light to shoot.  Obviously Dillon's range of "good shots" is much greater in his mind than the range most other players have.  So there's a fine line to walk there to get Dillon to think about his shot selection and look for other players without it getting in his head. The long term numbers undoubtedly say we are better with him on the court, even with him not shooting the greatest, so that may be why he gets a longer leash.

I want Dillon around but I think in a couple of years ZW will make a better 4th/5th option type because he is willing to accept a backseat role and seems to actually enjoy playing off the ball.  Dillon will always fire up ill advised shots.

What contract do you think would be fair for Dillon?

Take into account that Ja will likely get the supermax and it seems likely Bane will also get the max.

For reference:

Andrew Wiggins signed a 4 year, $109m extension
De'Andre Hunter signed a 4 year, $95m extension.
Lu Dort just signed a 4 year, $87.5m extension.
Keving Porter Jr. signed a 4-year $82.5m extension.

I think 4 years/$100m is "fair" - anything above the Wiggins deal to me would be an overpay.

^Add'l context: Hunter's contract has incentives for being DPOY and for playing over 70 games + making the Finals.

Perhaps you can structure Dillon's the same way: incentives for 1st/2nd team All-Defense, for making WCFs/Finals and I don't know if you can get wonky w/ FG%/Assists goals (I imagine that could create some weird situations so probably not the best idea).

Im not sure but what you just reminded me of is that there is no way to resign Bane, Dillon and OG.

I'm going to guess it will be in the $22-$24 million a year range.  No way he will get Wiggins level money.

Should such an unreliable offensive player get all of that?

?.  It's debateable.

Dillon scores 2 more points a game than Dort on the same shooting %.  Dort is 2% better at 3's.

But with Dillon, you've got guard/wing that can handle the ball, but also has defensive versatility that can guard Chris Paul, to LeBron, to Zion.

Jaren is averaging more than Dillon with 4 fewer shots a game and a lower usage.

I've stopped blaming Dillon. If he's been a given a green light with no repercussions, then I can't get mad at him for taking advantage.

It tells me that this team has a serious philosophical and coaching problem that's been there since 2019

Yep i was waiting on your response.

You aren't seriously upset with Coach Jenkins are you? The Grizzlies are within 1 game of First Place in the West despite losing two games by a combined 3 points. The Grizzlies are a young team compared to many teams they are competing against also.

I already stated i am not in favor of firing Jenkins.  I am just of the mindset that the players aren't the only ones at fault when things go wrong.    During those losses i was upset with the ENTIRE team including Coaching staff.   I thought TJ was easily outcoached by Ham in LAL loss.

I think its disingenuous of any fan to look at our roster and think we have a talent problem.   Lack of talent is no longer an excuse.  Right now almost everything we do from here on out should be about Championship run.   The real obstacles i see to that are not from a personnel standpoint anymore but scheme/strategy.

We are not a good Halfcourt team and have not really been even average since JV was here.   That isn't the players fault that is on the Coach.    Offensive Strategy, Schemes, tactics and rotations all fall at the feet of the coach.

TJ has had Ja and Jaren for 4yrs now and still hasn't figured out how to maximize both of them together.   Utah Sac have top flight offensive schemes and efficiency they are not more talented than we are.   Dillon chucking and Ja 1 on 5 forays into the paint - thats on the Coach to control.

I believe a big reason why our team ups the pace and shoots early in clock when our team isn't set to rebound the miss.  Is because we try to hurry up and score before opposing team forces us into a halfcourt set.  Sure we survive and thrive in regular season, but we all know that tactic will not work in POs.

TJ needs to be implementing more halfcourt sets to get Bane good looks from 3 (he still doesn't get up enough attempts) and Jaren so he can exploit the many mismatches he has.   Instead things mostly devolve into whichever player on perimeter has the ball take the shot.

Teams know that if they slow us down and crowd paint we will struggle mightily to score.    Thats been true for a while so TJ should have a counter to that by now.

Defensive scheme purposely aggressively overhelps in the paint which leaves 3pt shots mostly open.   That is TJ scheme and we saw how that worked against the Warriors on Xmas.   That needs to be adjusted before the Playoffs too.

So tell me which player should i be upset with when i am frustrated by rotations, lineups, and schemes??

Why do you have to be upset with anyone? What is your overwhelming desire to blame people? Hubie Brown used to say that there are just 5-7 games every season where things just don't work. The players are human. They have ups and downs. Some days are better than others. The Grizzlies lost two games by three points in total and people are talking about breaking up the team. It's like everyone forget the 11 previous games.

Take a chill pill. Accept that the players are humans not robots that perform the same way every night. Coaches are human and they don't know what is going to happen when a shot goes up so they can't predict what will happen. Even Michael Jordan, the GOAT, talked about how many times he failed. It motivated him to work harder not tear down everything he has done to get this far.

Oh got it so fans of a team are not allowed to be upset when they lose.   Got it.  Thanks for clearing that up for me.  I have been doing this fan thing all wrong for decades!

You do realize there is a difference between being upset about an avoidable loss and placing blame on one individual for the outcome, right?

That one line, early in the post, gets lost in the preponderous statements that followed singling out TJ as the problem. This brings me back to my original comment, why do you have to place blame on anyone. No one tried to lose the game. It's a bad loss but there have been many more examples where the team played very well (hence the 2nd spot in the conference). It sucks but we don't have to tear apart Dillon, TJ or anyone to grieve the loss.

This isnt little league where everyone gets participation trophies for trying.   End game is championship for the team according to themselves.    What are you talking about?

I'm talking about one game. You weren't talking about championships in your diatribe against JT's coaching (with the one line about the entire team being at fault). The Grizzlies didn't lose the Championship last night nor Friday night in LA. What are you talking about?

Or are you just trying to change the topic to avoid saying I am right?

Meanwhile, and back to the Dillon Brooks thing, I don't see him being part of the Memphis Grizzlies after this season. I can't see us investing in a player for another 3-5 years when it's tough watching him play basketball now.

My diatribe was in regards to those games exposing our weaknesses that can be exploited in Playoffs.   I stated that in my rant.  It wasn't about 1 game.

Maybe he won't get $22-24m, but I have a hard time seeing him resigning for less than $20m a year. I think he's going to want at least 4yr/$100m to stick around based on how he seems to view himself in interviews and with his play on the court (e.g., shot selection and hero ball at times).

The winning defensive play on Cleveland must have him hyped himself into believing he deserves as many shots as he wants. He has always wanted the glory that comes with offense.

Dillion wants to be more than a defensive stopper. He wants to believe that he is a go-to guy on offense too.

It's been a constant dark spot of his throughout his career.

Dillion gonna Dillion. You live with it or move him. I doubt he will ever change. It's his stubbornness that makes him a defensive standout.

Dillion will

not be with Memphis next season
