What has to happen now?

Recommended Posts

We're 8-8. 8th out of 15 in the conference. Some of the teams ahead of us obviously belong there. We've had some good games. Jaren looks to be growing and developing and Avoiding Fouls!

But. Those horrible losses.   So, check all that apply. Add your own.

(1) Shoulda kept a veteran leader, and for all his smarts Kyle isn't it, and Adams isn't either.

(2) Admit that we don't have as much NBA-quality depth as we thought we did. Losing DN and AM is too much.

(3) Wait for the newbies, let them play a bit, they'll be fine.

(4) Keep Jenkins, but maybe tell him not to try to do everything at once.

(5) No, do try to do everything at once. This isn't our year for the fourth seed (next year is, though) and we need to develop.

(6) Just decide who plays where already - with some exceptions for matchups

(7) We'll be fine when Dillon's back for good.

(8) Coach, can we work on the D a bit?

Reload around Jaren aka Jaren Ball.  4-5 pairings should just be Jaren/Adams and BC/Jaren.  Give Tillman’s minutes to Yves Pons.

Play Sam Merrill at the 2. Great shooting profile, good length.  Start him next to Dillon on the wing.  Play Bane off the bench in the Vinnie Johnson instant offense 6th man role.  Play Kyle off the bench as a point center.  Slo Motion offense with Kyle and 4 shooters AND play some Kyle/Jaren pick and rolls/pick and pops when Ja sits.

Promote Karim Mane and Freddie Gillespie to the Grizz.  Send Konchar and ZW down to Southaven.  Trade Culver/Tillie/Tillman for a couple of protected 2nd round picks and a veteran small forward.  Keep Aldama on a 2 way deal but try to draft over him.

Starters: Ja/Merrill/Dillon/BC/Jaren

6th man: Bane!

7th man: Tyus

8th man: Adams

Slo Motion Offense Star Wars Bar Scene Bench Mob: Kyle/Melton/Mane with some combo of Dillon/Merrill/Bane.

13th man: Freddie Gillespie.  Or is that the 12th man?  Ok... Yves Pons might be 12.  Pons could work with Point Kyle....

Obviously this team is inconsistent.  When we miss shots, our defensive intensity seems to suffer - and vice versa (when the other team hits shots, it affects our offense).  We tend to get blown out, which is disturbing.

Maturity will help, but that takes time.  For now, our guys need to toughen up and be more professional in their approach.  Expect a battle every night.  We're not good enough to get overconfident.

Both interesting. You have to assume they plan to load around Jaren eventually. I'll bet if they do, Ja will score just as often.   And Pons deserves a look; let's see him in a game we don't expect to win anyway.

Sure. Pons can do some BC stuff but actually looks more explosive and tougher/more versatile on defense.

If Jaren’s big man pairings are, in order: BC/3J, 3J/Adams, Pons/3J then I think we will be in better shape. Then the Point Kyle rotation with Jaren as the pop/roll man surrounded by 3 shooters: Dillon and Merrill and Bane.

Too many interesting, lanky 7 footer-ish guys overseas.  Bring a couple (or 3) over or at least scout them: Kostas Freak, Vrenz Bleijenbergh, Borisa Simanic.  Maybe even give Freddie Gillespie (on the Memphis Hustle) a 10 day contract.  He can rebound and block shots.

Other than that... tank for Jalen Duren.

It just seems so damned weird that on the one hand the team can beat Denver twice, the Clips twice...yet turn around and get RUN out of the gym by the likes of New Orleans and Minny.

How do you even answer that?  It makes no sense at all.

Some of it is matchups... not sure what the rest is.

I like the tanking and getting one more stud. ZW I think will be decent but I dont know how good.

they both have perimeter guys that can go off and we play two of our worst perimeter defenders at the same time

1, 2, and 8. We aren’t winning anything without at least a top 10 defense. That’s where it needs to start.

A shot at Jalen Duren, Jabari Smith Jr. or Chet Holmgren would be nice — then with extra picks to make a run at Jaden Ivey or Ochai Agbaji or AJ Griffin or a sleeper like Josh Minott.

Maybe we can trade lots of our bench pieces for cash and picks.

I would consider going “all in” on Ja/Dillon/Clarke/Jaren taking nearly all the shots and playing the majority of available minutes with spots 5/6/7 rotating between Merrill/Culver/Pons.  We don’t need all of Kyle/Adams/Tyus/Zaire/Tillman or even Bane/Melton.  Just lots of mediocre pieces that don’t fit clogging our roster and salary cap.

I think this team is following the same path as last years a little bit. To those who forgot the roller coaster ride from the beginning of last year, the team started 2-6, won 7 in a row to get to 9-6, and then lost 3 in a row to get to 9-9.

Then the magical .500 streak happened, with the team hitting every possible .500 record from 9-9 to 10-10, 11-11 etc all the way to 17-17.  After getting off track, they got back to .500 at 20-20, then they hung around .500 all the way until 33-33.  Then they hit a win streak of 5 (mostly tanking teams) to get to 38-33 before losing to GSW to finish off the season at 38-34.

The Lakers, Nets, Jazz etc are all in on winning now.  The Rockets, Thunder, Magic are all about playing for the future.  This team is trying to do both and it isn't easy.  Young guys want to win, but they also want their minutes and shots, and are all playing to get numbers for their next contract.  That's basically everyone but Adams.  And the fact of the matter is several of these young guys  aren't going to be in Memphis in 2 years.  This team is going to be maddeningly up and down for a while, I think.

Up and down is part of the process. We are too bad in defense to expect better than 8 this year. Let's continue the learning process and try to be smart at next FA time. Some games a a bit frustrating but that's the way it is.

I do think this team needs Dillon. He's our second best offensive player and the only person we have with the size and quickness to guard high level 3s in this league. We are a far better team with him on the floor.

Defense has to improve, a lot of that falls on Bane. He is constantly getting torched on that end. That's why I think he needs to move to the bench, where he's not asked to guard ultra quick starting SGs.

Like Grizzled Vet said, we're playing to win and building for the future. We are spending roster spots on Merrill, Culver, Santi, and ZW because they are young with upside. ZW would not be getting minutes if we weren't trying to fast-track his development. He's not good right now, but we knew that would be the case. Trading Grayson out for ZW was going to make us slightly worse from that perspective. Grayson is also 6 years older than him.

I want more minutes for Melton, as he's still one of our better defenders. More time for Jaren at center (so less overall for Adams most likely). Adams is still a fine player, but we have to figure out how to use him. He's best on offense in the pick and roll and cleaning the glass, and he's a pretty good passer. If it is not one of those things, don't make him do it. Just in general, stop playing drop coverage on screens. At some point in the Clippers game we started hedging with Adams, and it went far better for us overall.

Who are you talking about with DN and AM?

In my opinion, #3, #4 part a, #5 and #7 are all good answers.

We can't just "promote" Mane or Gillespie or anyone not under contract to the Grizzlies. Doesn't matter if they play for the Hustle or not.

The only players on the Grizz roster are the 15 players under contract and the 2 two-way players. Those 17 are the only ones eligible. If Gillespie were to play for the Grizz, they would have to waive someone else, and then agree to a contract with Gillespie first.

MPJ is out probably for the year -- maybe longer with back/nerve damage issues.  Lingering issues like this could very well end his career prematurely.

The Denver Nuggets are now staring into the abyss.

Should we make a deal?  What if we can take them to the cleaners even if MPJ never plays again AND we have to pay the vast majority of the contract?

Supposedly $175 million is non-insured so only $40 million or so has any wiggle room -- but the back-end of the deal looks a bit better from the bag-holder's perspective.  Although the upfront cost is "federal bailout" type money.

Send the Nuggets a couple of expiring contracts/young vets who can help them for the playoff push (Tyus/Kyle) PLUS Steven Adams who can tag team with The Joker (or be an ideal backup center for them).  Also send them Xavier Tillman, Konchar, Jarrett Culver's contract, Santi Aldama, and ZW8 plus a future second round pick.

We take them to the cleaners but they dodge a massive bullet (that is the MPJ contract): Bones Hyland, Bol Bol, Zeke Nnaji plus Monte Morris along with their first round pick and cash considerations should help the Memphis Grizzlies wash down that massive MPJ contract.

Nuggets lose a few good youngsters in Bones, Bol, and Nnaji but Jokic/Crawford (when he gets back)/Barton/Aaron Gordon is still a serviceable core (to go with Jeff and Jam Green plus the Grizz trio of Tyus/Kyle/Adams).  ZW8, PJ Dozier, X Tillman and Markus Howard are their young guys with "upside".

... we upgrade our bench with a potential Bones/Melton/Bane/Nnaji/Bol Bol lineup.  Plus, Monte Morris for veteran point guard play in a pinch.  Sam Merrill adds shooting.  In the starting five we still have 4 good ones in Ja/Dillon/Jaren and Brandon Clarke.  IF MPJ ever plays then he is an ideal fifth guy.  If not... maybe move Sam Merrill into that fifth starter spot (and slide Dillon to the 3).  ... we will also then have FOUR chances to draft a good small forward in '22 (supposedly a good/really good small forward/wing/combo forward draft).
