Ahh yes, the ole fan of (insert favorite team here) "I'll trade these lesser players to get a better player" deal. You see it from fans across all teams. Not saying that Jones and Allen are bad, but are they good enough to package with a pick to get a "legit scoring 3"? Why would a team give up a legit scoring 3 who starts for 2 bench players and pick? It's the age old question in sports

Well throw a bucket of paint on me and color me confused. Let's see, Lions says we need to upgrade at the 3 and you reply:

So you are saying the legit scoring 3 that you want to trade for is not a starter? Then you go back and say we need a C which is what you originally said by wanting to trade for Allen's afro. I'm just confused...sorry.

Kai Jones might be as good in 4 years when he is Allen's age.  And all we would have to do is draft him and keep our pants on.

But that would make too much sense compared to giving away the farm for one guy, who if he gets injured...how does that end up?  (hint: NOT good)

I wish we could get him but the cavs will never let him walk away to sign with someone else.

I still can't believe Brooklyn traded this guy. There were really no other teams bidding on Harden, and they somehow ended up trading away Allen, LeVert and Prince on top of the million draft picks they gave up/swapped.

I know they don't care that much, because they have their big 3, but it still reeks of poor negotiating.

Yeah, don't see why Cleveland lets him walk. He was the reason they got involved in the trade talks.

It's Allen 4th year, so he starts making real money next year. The Nets already pay KD, Harden and Kyrie a fortune, Jordan and Joe Harris make another $27M, so they weren't going to be able to pay Allen $20M next year. So it's get something for the asset before he walks.  Prince is way overpaid at $15M, so Allen and LeVert make up for that.

The real question is why Houston immediately turned around and traded Allen and LeVert.

A minor question is why we didn't try to get in on the LeVert bidding. He would look really good in a Grizz uniform.

They can afford whatever they want in a market like that if they're good. Brooklyn can pay 200+ million a year counting luxury tax if they're winning rings and still be profitable.

Plus, Allen is a RFA so they could have forced someone to at least compensate through sign and trade in the offseason. Instead they basically dumped him in a move where they had no reason to. He's better than all the bigs they have and still very young.

Houston didn't want players, only picks. They were tanking. It's still surprising things unfolded how they did, but it still all comes down to Brooklyn giving up way more than they needed to get Harden.

No, they can’t. Teams are losing big money the last two years. They had basically no ticket revenue this season It’s why Alt Grind or somebody posted about the NBA opening $275M lines of credit for the teams. Very few are willing to pay repeater tax money. Warriors did this last year, but even they will likely let Oubre walk this summer.

It doesn't really flow well with the fact that he still would have been a Restricted free agent, so instead of him basically being a throw in to a trade they weren't in a bidding war to get done in the first place, they could have possibly used him to help restock some assets after gutting their draft pick. Heck, they could have signed and traded him for cash, a protected 1st and a 2nd rounder.

So yeah, I don't buy the money saving argument at all. It would not have impacted their finances this year, and they could have had the freedom to reassess going into the offseason. Throw in that they are currently attempting a deep playoff run and can sell near-capacity crowds at possibly the most expensive prices of any team still in the playoffs, and they probably stand to lose a lot less than most teams this year since playoffs are very lucrative.

If they win a ring and go back into next year with full capacity crowds, then yes, they likely could afford to keep him and wouldn't need to worry about money at all.
