SC Grizz

With the 40th pick the Grizzlies take...

Who?

Sort of hard to guess who will be there, but do we go best available or are we hunting a specific position?

Are we focusing on a specific skill set (i.e. shooting)?

Let's keep it to just this pick not trading up, etc. We already have the draft thread for that.

It looks like Elijah Hughes is trending up and will be out of our range, but I would like for us to target depth at the SF/SG and shooting.

Desmond Bane seems like a guy who will be there and is a safe bet. These older players seem to not be highly sought after but I don't think the guy missed a game in his entire college career (important for our team with perpetually injured dudes). 43% 3 point shooter on 4 attempts per game for his career.

I'd look at someone like that.

I'm on board with Desmond Bane.  College career 43% on decent volume from 3.  Looks passable on D.  Almost 4 assists/game too.  Potential to be a useful wing rotation player for sure.

Markus Howard is interesting.   Will be pretty one dimensional but that one dimension rates to be pretty darn good.  Elite 3 point shouter on high volume, who also gets to the line at a good rate and shoots 85% there.  5'11" is limiting but there's a place for him in the nba imo.

Isaiah Joe I guess, though I haven't seen him in many mocks. Quickley if he's there, . Cassius Stanley is very interesting, Gerald Green vibes from him. Skylar Mays is pretty solid as well, high floor/low ceiling, reminds me of Malcolm Brogdan.

Count me down for Desmond Bane.

The Michigan State pick would be Xavier Tillman

The Duke pick would be Tre Jones (and that would be a decent fall if he were to be available).

The Chris Wallace 2nd round pick would be Josh Hall (5 star HS guy that falls in draft)

One draft site has Louiville's Jordan Nwora going to Memphis, and I'd be OK with that, but I won't be shocked if it is an international player that I say, "Who"?

Last two drafts were so much fun. The lottery, then the combine, visits, rumors about medicals like would JJJ's team agree to a physical.

Just can't get excited yet about the 40th pick in this draft. Maybe that will change by October 16th.

Bane, Hughes, Joe, Mays are the shooters this team needs. Riller is a great scorer and a very skilled player despite his age at 23. Here is an interesting prospect I hope they would look at: Karim Mane. A young athletic combo guard out of Canada and a potential first round pick in 2021 had he not come out early.

Markus Howard shot between 40 and 54 percent from three every season in college.  Just sayin'

Love that guy.  He even had a few games this year of 5 or 6 assists.  Cynics make it sounds like the ball never leaves his hands once Marquette inbounds the ball.  Other teams threw Trae/Steph defenses at him too.  That’s kinda what it felt like.

I think we should load up on second round picks (or a late first if we need to).  Bring the new Splash Brothers off the bench: Markus Howard and Sam Merrill.  Draft/chase Cassius Stanley to be our athletic defender/finisher.  Only shot 36% on 3’s but shot 42% on catch and shoot 3’s.  Didn’t dribble much in college but he flashed some of that stuff in HS.  What if he gave us the TA defense but with more dunking and shooting?

The Sixers have four 2nd round picks this year.

That would work.  Stockpile shooters in a 3 point shooting league just in case nobody in next year’s draft can actually shoot the ball.

Philly also picking at 21.  Tankathon has them taking Cassius Stanley with one of their early second rounders (we are slated to take Xavier Tillman).

That is one team in turmoil. Even if they don’t move one of their main stars, they might be looking to trade Al Horford.  If they use 21 as a trade sweetener, we should offer Dieng (and his expiring contract) and Slo Mo.  Horford would give us a good fourth big man and could be a perfect fit off the bench next to Brandon Clarke.

Something like Horford/21/34 for Dieng/Slo Mo/40.

I like Bane too, I just don't see the DB comparison that some have made in another thread. There are knocks on his length and quickness like there were on Brooks, but I think the similarities end there. And you are not going to get a long athletic player who hits 3s at a 43% clip with the 40th pick.

Don't like Desmond Bane. He's a below average to poor athlete. His shooting form is quick, but he probably could only function as a catch and shoot specialist, I don't think he'll be run off screens and certainly don't think he could create a 3 point shot. I doubt seriously if he can defend at this level. Undersized as well.

Jordan Nwora is intriguing. Better size than Bane, and more athleticism. I think he's athletic enough to get by as a 3.  Also a good shooter, and looks like you could run him off screens. He's a good rebounder for his position. He'd be perfect for the second unit.

Mason Jones

Or move up to get Elijah Hughes or Josh green

Saadiq Bey

It's quite a few guys I could see filling our holes.

Bey is projected as a late lottery pick or just outside the lottery, he will not likely be there at 40.

Nwora is one of the few second round types with the ACTUAL size to be a 3 and D small forward.  Most of the other “wings” are just shooting guards or combo guards.  Actually not a very good draft at all for small forwards.

3 years / $81M the next 3 seasons. Horford turned 34 in June. If that seems scary, don't even look at the Tobias Harris contract.

76ers are a mess. They will fire Brett Brown after the Celts series. The Process should not have been trusted.

Every lottery I've seen has had so many different orders and different players outside the lottery even some undrafted. Those are some of the guys I like and considering how varying this draft looks if he's there he deserves a look

The process was a disaster. If we had space and it likely wouldn't hurt us signing our guys I'd take him for 3 of those picks

I wouldn’t be against punting and getting an international player to stash for a year or two.
