ESPN Love? No, Zion will win ROY

Really high praise from T-Mac.

....but that whole talking to the stuffed lobster was quite disturbing.

Does this mean possibly 2 ESPN Games next year instead of 1?

I would love for the Grizzlies to match up 8 v 1 vs Lakers and have many of their talking heads discuss the other players besides Ja.  They'd probably bring up OJ Mayo and Zach Randolph before they cut to what the Knicks and Lakers FO's are doing.

I LIKE what I see now. Initially I was very skeptical about Jenkins, but man, now this team is sooooo fun. Young, healthy talented and versatile. Especially I was impressed with the defense lately. Running and gunning is all fun, but if a team is able to clamp down on defense - that's a big ace up the sleeve. Right now starting five is pretty much set up, but during the course of the game Jenkins has many options to through different 5 on the floor. Depending on a match-ups. We need to keep racking these Ws and sky is the limit.

I'll repeat myself - you can not have too much talent. And if the guys enjoy playing together - that's a blessing. Lately Grizzlies are on a scoring binge, scoring anyway they can. And even JV is not lost on the floor. He is not the quickest, most mobile big for sure, but he hurts people in the paint. He is not lost on of offense (that was the case in Toronto), and defensively - big body, blocks, intimidates drivers, rebounds.

Grizzlies are like a new car with many different cool features. Let's hope that we will make playoffs and I am pretty sure that we will not be swept. We can actually make some noise even. West has plenty of veteran teams, a lot of guys had many injuries - that's not the case in Memphis. With every game so far this season team is developing, learning, getting better. And Ja, JJJ, JV - can lit up opponents any given night. That's pretty cool. Not to depend on one Mega - Star and watch him taking 20+ shots every game. Ball is moving, guys are scoring, Ws are climbing...

19-22, mid season point.  We are in the #8 spot right now, I don't want to be over optimistic, but I think that even #7 spot is not out of reach. Just based on our latest performance.

Man ... ESPN ... I'm telling you, you guys need to book the Grizzlies as much as possible.  They are just flat out fun.  It's not Magic Johnson Showtime yet, but it's getting there.  Must see TV ... watch out league!

I'd like the NBA to go to more of a flex schedule after about Valentines Day.

At that point, stop putting the Warriors on.  If Portland continues to look like a team that will win 36 games, reduce their content.  Knicks should never be on.  Neither should Wizards. And if the Kings and Suns continue to disappoint, reduce or replace them.

More Grizzlies.  More Thunder.

Besides being more interesting teams, build up some momentum for when/if these teams (maybe Spurs or Pelicans) make playoffs.

ESPN still hates us.

That Sharpe guy on Undisputed was talking about how "Ja is his guy"   Pretty sure he was on the Zion train before he got hurt.

Sharpe was also the one before the NBA draft talking crap about Memphis.    Skip as annoying as he is at least stuck with his pick.

Sharpe is a knucklehead.  Not just related to us either.

Undisputed isn’t on ESPN and “ that Sharp guy” is a NFL hall of famer.

It is also possible to be big fans of both Zion and Ja

I know undisputed isn't on ESPN. I know its on FS1. I'm just pointing out what people in the media are saying.

I don't care if hes a HOF or not. He crapped on us before the draft and now Ja is his boy. Tired of people jumping on the bandwagon. Ive been a fan since Vancouver with Big Country. So when someone craps on us and then pretends to love us its annoying to me.

Yes you can be a fan of both but he had zero respect for us before the draft.

LoveFest continues  coming from The Ringer

https://www.theringer.com/nba/2020/1/17/21069488/nba-awards-giannis-antetokounmpo-bucks-ja-morant-grizzlies

The Yooooo! Award for Most Pleasant Surprise of the Quarter: the Grizzlies!

That’s three awards for the Grizz, and after having already spent about 700 words singing the praises of Morant and Melton, I think we can keep the acceptance speech short here. If you had told me in October there would be any one-month stretch in which the Grizzlies would have a better record than the Rockets, Lakers, Clippers, Raptors, and 76ers, I would’ve asked you which grim techno-reaper had engineered a new bubonic plague, and why it had chosen All-NBA players as its target. (Either that, or whether you’d gotten your hands on some of those good gummies during your most recent trip to Waiters Island.)

And yet, here we are—tuning in for what is, right now, the most exciting show in the league.

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/28482160/ten-nba-things-like-including-luka-doncic-dwight-powell-dance

How about a fresh serving of 10 NBA things:

1. The tricks of Ja Morant

Morant's athleticism and fearlessness strike you first. He is so fast. He wants to dunk on everyone -- to humiliate victims, the bigger the better.

All that is cool. But what is most impressive about Morant -- the runaway Rookie of the Year -- is his veteran craft. He already knows how to start and stop with a live dribble, and keep defenses guessing until the best option reveals itself. He sees every pass. He imagines passes no one else sees, and conjures them with dribble moves designed to shift the defense in some specific way.

You just don't see rookies doing stuff like this:

That fake spin -- the Smitty -- dusts **** near the entire LA Clippers team. The one-handed lefty gather into a reverse layup is borderline pornographic. That insta-gather is already a Morant trademark -- useful in tight spaces.

He has a mean pass fake:

He busts it out on the perimeter to freeze help defenders:

A lot of ball handlers turn statuesque when someone else takes the controls. Not Morant. He weaponizes his speed as an off-ball cutter.

Morant isn't the only reason the Memphis Grizzlies -- 13-6 since early December -- have improbably surged into the Western Conference's No. 8 spot. Their three core big men -- Jonas Valanciunas, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Brandon Clarke -- are balling, and their bizarro bench is obliterating opponents.

But Morant is driving it. He is real. He is a superstar in the making playing winning basketball. He belongs at the edges of the All-Star conversation right now.

This is such BS. ESPN is now picking up Zion's debut game. I wonder if they had anything to do with influencing when he would come back(the MLK game is on TNT). I think they worked with the Pels to ensure that his debut would be on ESPN. So the NOP who are 10 games under .500 who have already had numerous national tv games (understandably so cause ESPN was pushing Zion so hard) will now get 2 back to back national tv games? I hope they get blown out in both.

Quote

ESPN's decision to show Williamson's first game instead of Nuggets-Rockets is the latest example of what a draw the high-flying 19-year-old is. In August, the Pelicans were awarded 30 national TV games, the most in franchise history. They were to air on ABC twice, ESPN 11 times, NBA TV 10 times and TNT seven times. Those plans have changed slightly with Williamson sidelined for what is now New Orleans' first 42 games of the season.

ESPN could easily replace some of these junk NBA games with Griz games but they refuse to do so yet they will quickly replace games to showcase ZIon and probably try to give him a ROY push.

Golic and Wingo spent a bunch of time the other morning trying to start the Zion hype train back up and wondering whether Zion had enough season left to overtake Ja for ROY

ESPN says NOP will make the playoffs.

I get it. They have invested a lot into the Zion hype. Sadly, they are trying to ruin a great rookie campaign by Ja and throwing the Grizz under the bus in the process to push Zion for ROY because they awarded NOP all of those games.

I predict Zion will have ongoing injury problems throughout his career. Don't wish anything bad on him, but I said that about him in college as well and he has yet to play an NBA game.

They're remaining schedule is weak but in the NBA you cant put together a bunch of talented 22 year olds and get automatic success. It takes atleast a month or two at minimum to gel and figure out how to win as a team.

I don't think wins has anything to do with. I am predicting if Zion plays 35 games, he will be awarded ROY, at worst co-ROY. He's been hyped since college, was the # pick and got the Pels 30 nat'l tv games all off of hype. If he plays 35 games, most of those games will be broadcast nationally and every Sportscenter and every other show in ESPN will lead off with Zion and Zion will dominate social media posts, he will win ROY even if they don't make the playoffs.

I can see him getting Co-ROY for sure.   NBA/ESPN already predestined Zion to be the Next Big Thing so that hype train will not be derailed.   Especially since NBA ratings have been going down.

I think if Ja makes the playoffs over Zion then Ja will still get it.

Somebody show this to Ja.  I want to make sure we win this MLK Day Game; and the best way to ensure that is to have Ja ****** about being dissed by ESPN.

Ja doesn’t seem to use anger as fuel... that’s a Russ or Dame or Chris Paul move...

Ja reminds me more of AI - gonna do his thing - to whoever- anyway

So you guys are saying that Zion is winning the popular vote?

I like Zion as much as anyone but he has to prove that he is clearly better than Sekou Doumbouya first.

Big Sports Entertainment Fake News just wants a horse race.  And Zion’s a HORSE.

Magic Johnson didn’t win rookie of the year either.
