Extra Draft Pick Discussed for Winner of Potential Midseason Tourney

Another garbage idea. The top teams in the NBA are going to be winning this tournament. Not the Wizards, or the Grizzlies or whoever. We don't need to be giving the Lakers another draft pick, or the Clippers another draft pick. Reward them with tiebreakers in the playoffs or an automatic bid into the the playoffs if they're not currently in. For instance, you're the Clippers and are tied with the Rockets for the best record, but the Rockets hold the tiebreaker because they won 3 out of 4 games against you. If you win the tournament, you hold the automatic tiebreaker and get better seeding. Or - lets say you're the Grizzlies - you win the tournament and now you're automatically seeded in 8th place, replacing the team with the worst record of the 16 teams.

edit: I also doubt the players will view getting a draft pick for their team enough incentive to take the tournament seriously. It has to have meaning for the players, which a draft pick won't do. But if they know they'll get home court against whatever team in the playoffs, that might do it.

Yeah, I hate this whole midseason tournament idea.  No contending team is going to want to put their best players on the line for the possibility of an extra late round draft pick, and that wouldn't serve as adequate motivation for those players to begin with.

However, if they absolutely INSIST on doing this tournament thing, what they should do is move it to the end of the season, and have it so the lottery bound teams compete in the tournament for the draft pick and/or an automatic berth as the sixteen seed in the playoffs.

If they do the tourney for a draft pick make it as high a draft pick as possible.

Since the top 4 picks are determined by ping pong balls, then what about the FIFTH pick?

Could also discourage tanking since the team with the WORST record in the league could fall to 6.

Then tweak the odds again.  Worst 5 teams have the same odds (basically), next 5 have the same (but worse) odds.  4 "best" non-playoff teams also have similar odds among themselves.

Maybe you also give ALL playoff teams a shot to win the draft lottery too.  Like each playoff team gets a 1% chance.

This math looks right:

Worst 5 teams each get an 8% shot at the top pick.

Next five worst teams (6-10) each get a 6% chance at the best pick.

Teams in the 11-14 range get 4% odds of winning the top pick.

All 16 playoff teams each have a 1% shot at winning the lottery.

If they do a mid-season tourney why not just have G League teams play at Madison Square Garden or something?  Put a ton of cash on the line.

Everyone hates the mid-season tournament until the Grizzlies win it and then everyone will love the idea!

Maybe the WNBA should try it first.  Like the Christmas/New Year's Eve from Las Vegas tournament.

If I did it... maybe you have G League teams play to win the fifth pick in the NBA Draft.  How would that even work?

For a mid-season tourney don't you need like outside basketball leagues/brands competing?

NBL vs. Euro League would be fun.

Now, if they made the G League basically a second league -- or just had a different league of 30 teams (but a 30 team expansion would make owners' heads explode) then you still keep the NBA farm teams.

Can 30 teams support middling pro basketball franchises (but maybe a step up from the G League)?  Possibly.  Could probably get a few from CA especially once the Warriors move to San Francisco.  Oh wait, they already did.

Oakland, San Jose, Anaheim, and San Diego look like prime prospects.  Other west coast teams could be Seattle, Vancouver, Boise, Las Vegas, and Reno.

Just have a secondary league and keep the G League for the NBA.  A Brave New ABA would be fun!

THEN a mid-season tourney between NBA teams and Brave New ABA teams (BNABA) would be super fun!

miniABA or ABA-lite teams could exist in towns like Barstow, Tijuana, Tacoma, and Laughlin (oh wow, that sounds BAD).

Give the BNABA a 4 point line -- and maybe you just have a 4 point line but with no 3 point line.  'nuthin but 7 foot centers and tiny guards.  But, Carmelo Anthony could play until he's 50 since the whole no-3-point-line thing could make the "mid-range game" more valuable.

A Brave New NBA Mother Of All Big Boards Mock Draft WOULD be fun!

Wow. Alt Grind posted a long thread and didn't mention his draft board once. Will miracles never cease?
