How About The Football Tigers

Recommended Posts

i didn't go there so I never really followed the FB team and unlike the basketball team, they have a long history of being outright horrible but I think they are in their best 4 year stretch in school history. They are ranked #21 in the Coaches poll and #22 in the AP poll. Good times and fun team to watch.

Unfortunately the big rumor is that Norvell is the lead target for Florida as head coach and Ferguson is a senior. I hope they win out and make a splash. They've hired two good coaches in a row so who knows, the third time may be a charmer where they can hire a keeper.

I don't know if the Tigers want to hire a keeper. They want to hire coaches who continually improve the team and by default become targets of bigger schools.

So they're supposed to hire perpetual losers? LOL. They tried that with Larry Porter.

The system is totally unfair to teams outside of the P5 (with the exception of ND) and they will not be able to compete in the next 10 years if this trend continues. The revenue gaps between the P5 and the G5 is too hard to overcome.

I've been saying for years that they need to have semi-pro/farm teams for basketball and football and get it away from universities. it's ridiculous.

Yay, Norvell is sticking around a little longer.

I think he did the smart thing.  Arkansas is not going to be competing for anything in the foreseeable future.  Don't make the jump to the P5 just to make the jump, wait for the right job to come along.  I was more worried that A-State may want to make a run at bringing him back.

In my mind, his best job would be the Missouri job, if that were to open in the next couple of years.  Keeps him close to his prime recruiting territory while allowing him to compete in the SEC East.  We'll see if they can win again next year now that their O.C. is the new guy at UCF.

Not that I'm in any hurry to see him leave.

Well, over two years later and the Tigers are still on fire and Norvell is still the coach. One more win over Cincy in the AAC championship and they go to the Cotton Bowl which would be YUUUGGE for a program like Memphis.

With that being said, the rumors are even stronger Norvell may jump. The only job I see him taking is FSU. He may fail and get fired in a couple of years but boy oh boy if he could turn them around and be there for 10 years, he's got it made.

As far as the SEC jobs go, Mizzou would be the only one to consider if he would consider them. He would have a path to the SEC championship in the SEC East. UGa and UF are generally the front runners but they always seem to slip up. If he wants to be in the SEC, that may be the best option. The West is a no go. I don't see any reason for him to even consider Arkansas despite his ties to the area. There's no way he's getting past Bama and LSU in the foreseeable future and he would be lucky to outdo Auburn and TAMU. His high mark may be fighting for 3rd or 4th place in the best years. As far as Ole Miss, that may be the biggest dumpster fire of a P5 job that there is. I would lose respect for Norvell if he went there. That job is just setting people up to fail. I would rather take a chance at failing at FSU. Failing at Ole Miss will get you nothing. They have no traditional power history. It's just there and happened to be a longtime SEC member.

I believe Norvell would have to be interested in the Florida State job but he may want to stay in Memphis. He's got a top 20 team, a major bowl on the horizon and national TV games becoming the norm. The cost of living in Memphis is much lower than in other places too.

Oh well. Sounds like he's the new coach at FSU. At least they won an AAC championship and will go to the Cotton Bowl.

Have no clue who they should go after as far as a new coach but I'll throw these names out based on what I have seen on social media:

  • Hugh Freeze- He would be my top choice. i don't care about any off of the field stuff as long as it wasn't illegal. He did some stuff that could be considered immoral but that's between him, his wife and his higher power imo. The guy can coach and has ties to Memphis
  • Ryan Silverfield- I guess he's a lead coordinator on Norvell's staff. He's serving as the interim. Don't know enough about him. Sounds like he's extremely interested. He apparently had opportunities to leave but seems as if he was waiting for Norvell to leave to get an opportunity to coach Memphis.
  • Barry Odom- Apparently there are reports that he is the leading candidate and the boosters want him badly. IDK, first off, he spurned them 4 years ago and left them in a lurch while he went back to Mizzou. I don't blame him for going back to his alma mater, it was just the timing. It worked out well for Memphis as they got Norvell. Secondly, he's a defense first guy and would need an OC who runs a high powered offense. I mean, if he's teh guy fine. He went .500 in 4 years in the SEC with limited talent maybe he can sustain the success at Memphis.

Memphis will miss Norvell but as long as the school is committed to a winning football program they should be able to find a suitable replacement to keep the team moving forward.
