The Mike Conley Apology Thread

I mentioned in one of my earlier posts that I lurked on here for years. I am well aware of the Conley wars, and if I had been on here, I would have been in the crowd that lost patience with him. And man, was I wrong to lose patience.

 

Props to the Grizzlies for sticking it out with him, for Hollins for pushing him, and Conley himself for so vastly improving in all phases of his game. The command of the floor, his decision making, his now deadly darts to the basket, and even his shooting.

 

Bottom line, he's turned not just into a solid NBA PG, he's turning into a guy who can win (and has won) this team games.

 

Frankly, I was as wrong about Conley as its possible to be wrong about a player. And happy to be so.

 

This franchise with a 23-year-old floor leader signed to what turns out to be a reasonable conract as he enters his prime. That's the bottom line.

 

Good on the Grizzlies. And on Conley.

Ill agree. I was president of the Conley hate club. He has turned into a man and has shown up on the mainstage. He still has a lot of growing to go but I am cool with where he can take us....He has won big games his whole life before the NBA...I like the potential now. Mike Conley wasnt sure money, but as a savings bond he continues to acrue interest. Good draft pick and good job locking him up for cheap!!

I always thought Conley would be legit, I wasn't no unreasonable person expecting Chris Paul but a respectful Terrell Brandon like career with maybe sneaking into a couple of all-star games. Might end up being better than Brandon though as he's slowly started to rely less on his jumpshot which plagued Brandon his entire career

Both Kyle and Mike have turned out to be nice PG...If Mike was surrounded by more shooters, he'd be up in there with the elite PGs. He's been great lately.

Mike is playing incredible basketball right now. He showed flashes of excellence early in the season (hence the extension) but then hit some patches of inconsistency for a month or two.. But he seems to have figured it out again and is arguably the most important player to this team right now.

 

The scary thing is, Mike still has plenty of room to get better. His 3pt shooting and mid-range jumper can and will get better/more consistent, and he will only continue to grow mentally and learn the ins and outs of the game.

I also think that Conley still gets the same amount of respect from the refs that he gets from this board. He gets such b.s. calls against CP3, and Barea.

 

Of course, I'm biased, but I think he gets the short end of the deal from the refs.

Where in the world do you see that Okafor has better stats? 10pts and 9rebs per game vs 16/10/4. Okafor has not all star apprearances because he doesn't deserve any. I fail to see how a guy putting up numbers like Horford's is overrated.

I was a fan of keeping them both. I love Lowry's style of play and hustle. He would be great coming off the bench for us now along with OJ, Shane and DA.

What an awesome refresher on why I lurked rather than posted on this board for years. What a bitter immature bunch folks on here can be at times. There is NO WAY that the improvement from Conley can be just dismissed by those who tried to run him out of town over and over again. And the improvement is not just to "passable" for an NBA point guard, he's become arguably key to this team's success on offense. When he's off his game (like against NO when he took himself out with foul trouble) this team struggles, greatly. With as deadly good as his drives have become (which are still amazing to watch given how small he is compared to many of his PG peers), if this team had a set of deadly three-point shooters, his assist numbers would get even better.

 

Facts are facts, and the fact is, Conley has made himself into a really REALLY good NBA player. Period. If people who formerly bagged on him incessantly cannot bring themselves to admit that and revisit their prior position reflectively, well, that's pretty sad. One would also note that Conley's improvement would argue against the knee-jerk posting that predominates too much message board posting in general and on here.
