How Memphis Barely Missed Out on Lebron James

Recommended Posts

The Draft Lottery was held on May 22 at Madison Square Garden, where so much about basketball has gone wrong in the past 20 years. Representing the Grizzlies on the dais was President of Basketball Operations Jerry West; Hall of Famer and NBA logo model.

Then-deputy commissioner Russ Granik gradually revealed the selection order. A sense of anticipation began to build when the Clippers were announced in the Grizzlies’ spot – the #6 pick. One by one, Memphis continued to dodge their death knell, inching closer to LeBron. Miami at #5. Toronto at #4. Then the Denver Nuggets – owners of the best lotto odds – fell to #3.

It was suddenly down to the Grizzlies and Cleveland Cavaliers. A 50% chance at LeBron James. This was actually happening.

But, of course, it didn’t. Granik yanked the retro Grizz logo out of the #2 envelope. No LeBron. No anything. A cliché like “so close and yet so far” seemed painfully insensitive.

However, knowing Jerry West track record and having selected Kobe Bryant in the 1997 NBA Trade, I'm sure he would have been all over this pick, with Lebron James.   Hopefully they wouldn't have passed on him.   Too bad, the Memphis Grizzlies barely missed out on this amazing talent.

This was terrible?  Memphis traded for a 35 year old veteran?  I thought maybe Otis was in his late 20's.... wow Who sat the Franchise back 20 years by doing this?? smh!

The Vancouver Grizzlies acquired OTIS THORPE, a veteran power forward, from the Detroit Pistons yesterday for a No. 1 draft choice.

The Grizzlies also renounced their rights to point guard GREG ANTHONY, who formerly played for the Knicks.

Thorpe, a 13-year veteran who won a National Basketball Association title with the Houston Rockets in 1994, had a public falling-out with Pistons Coach DOUG COLLINS last season in which neither would speak to the other.

The move will free salary cap room for the Pistons, who have been negotiating with the free-agent center BRIAN WILLIAMS and who also want to re-sign LINDSEY HUNTER and TERRY MILLS.

Thorpe, 35, has averaged 13.1 points and 8.9 rebounds over his career.

I don't think Memphis would have ever gotten LeBron. The league would not allow it but they will allow us to get the #1 pick this year.
