OFFICIAL 2023 NBA Draft MEGA THREAD with BRAND NEW Gonzo/Moneyball Draft Lotto Update. Put your big boards/mocks/draft stuff HERE!

I think we need a vertical spacing big. Has there been a Mitchell Robinson in any draft since ‘18? Tillman/Jaren seems to be clicking. Not sure if Tillman is a 4 or a 5. Probably just a Kevon Looney/Draymond Green LITE type. -
I am looking forward to our summer league crew led by Roddy, Lofton, and Kennedy Chandler. ZW should be there. Hopefully LaRavia and Vince Williams Jr do well along with whoever we draft. We probably shouldn’t draft over ZW just to draft over him, but if that’s the best archetype available, go for it. It’s also possible that we trade ZW on draft night, but I doubt it.

I'd say Tillman is about average for a 2nd string Center. -
Hmm, look at Roddy's shooting splits
Grizzfan7979 replied to Grizzfan7979's topic in Grizzlies Team Talk
Yeah, even when ZW was shooting ok last year he was still a bad on-ball defender who would die on screens and get lost and he couldn't rebound. Roddy can get tough rebounds and playmake and create his shot by getting to the rim and can finish through contact. I'm not super sold on Roddy's defense yet but the effort is there. -

I wouldn’t mind going after a player with a bit more athletic pop, but Whitehead has a nice shot and a good pedigree (and vice-versa). Get him if he’s “BPA”. Don’t get him because we either are trying to draft over ZW or because Whitehead has “trade value.”. Bane/Kennard/Dillon have similar profiles. If we get Dariq then he could fit in well with what we are trying to do. He’s probably a Tier 3 guy more me but there might only be 2 or 3 Tier 1 guys (Wemby/Thompson Twins) and a few Tier 2/low Tier 2 prospects (Brandon/Gradey/Scoot/Jordan Hawkins/Jarace Walker). As someone said earlier, Cason Wallace looks interesting. But I think he goes pretty high. Lacks buzz/flash/hype of Scoot Henderson but could yield more wins. Could be our Melton replacement AND give us a NEW CW. haha. In the late first range, two other Dukies (Lively and Filipowski) could work. Wouldn’t mind pairing Jaren with a 1a big of the future; Leonard Miller, Adem Bona or DaRon Holmes II could be options (although I need to do deep dives on all 3). Other wings worth a look: Colby Jones, Jaime Jaquez, Jr., (board fave Julian Strawther is probably moving up), Jordan Walsh is probably back on the radar, Houston has some solid guards/wings and the Houston Cougars are a very ALT GRIND type of team. Bilal Coulibaly is getting buzz. Sidy Cissoko looks like an ALT GRIND wing type. Tristan Vukcevic would be an interesting draft/stash prospect. UConn’s Sonogo and Clingan might be some solid, no-frills big men depth types. I also like Andre Jackson Jr. Andre might look better in an NBA scheme. He could be a Melton/Kyle Anderson type. If we are looking at drafting a 4th string point guard type (as Tyus or even Kennedy Chandler insurance), I like the OTE’s Jazian Gortman. Something about the beautiful absurdity that is his game. -

Salt Lake City is the runaway winner I believe. Hardly anything is open late there and very few bars/clubs, I feel like there are early restrictions on alcohol also -

Yeah, instead of setting childish rules like giving them curfew or telling them they can't go to nightclubs, they just bypass it all and just go straight to the airport. Tough to get into trouble if the bus goes straight from the arena to the airport, then back home or to next city. -

It's a fair opinion and one I understand completely but the players are adults (for the most part), they are paid for their performance on the court not their behavior off the court. The can't assign financial penalties or enforce lockdowns due to the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The team can request players be sensible and try to put the team's welfare first but if they don't there isn't a lot that the FO or coaches can do short of benching the player(s). Since a coach gets paid to win not babysit, not too many coaches want their best players being benched. -
Didnt say Beal could take you to a championship. Bane could never average 31 points on 49% shooting and take a team the playoffs like Beal did two years ago. Thats Beal's best season.

I was glancing through prospect stats on tankathon to see if any catch my eye as potential "FO types." Meaning the types they have tended to favor towards with the exception of Zaire, who still seems a bit of an aberration pick to me. One that did is Brandin Podziemski from Santa Clara. In addition to strong 3 point shooting, he's a great rebounder for his size and has solid assist and steal rates and reasonably good efficiency, all things the FO has tended to value. I could also see them having an interest in Trayce Jackson-Davis potentially, given BC's inury and/or if they aren't sure about Tillman's free agency. His stat profile reminds me a little of Tillman's coming out of college honestly, with the strong assist rate and slightly better scoring and block #s. He's definitely older though. -
I am putting them on same tier. Bane isn't anywhere near his prime while Beal has peaked. Supermax doesn't sway my thoughts on him and its not like im saying he isn't AllStar level player. Beal as no#1 wasn't getting anyone a championship. He should've always been a 2ndary. I see Bane as primary with same ceiling - everything depending on cast around him.

I dont know about these past couple of games but the volatility of Ja Morant probably makes him untradeable right now. Also the Raptors actually look good with Poetl at center. I could see them being a 4-6 seed next year with their current roster in the mix with the Cavs and Knicks. So they may be keeping OG.

I get that the glitzy cities are more likely to end up with players partying. Unfortunately, in the event that apparently was the final straw that led to this policy, the Grizz left Houston and flew to Denver, and 80 minutes after they touched down, Ja was in a strip club in Glendale with a friend and 2 security guards. It's very telling in the Taylor Brooks interview from 2021 that Ja said he he wasn't a guy that likes the attractions of a big city, and that he spent his time video games with his "fam" when in those cities. Fast forward 2 years and he's now hanging out with parts of his posse on the road. I wonder if the Grizzlies have set any rules about the posse. I realize some will say that you can't legislate what a player does in his free time, but i disagree. when you are making the kinds of money they make, i think the ownership has a right to establish rules when they are on a business trip. Just my opinion. -
After these past couple of games I don’t think Tyis is tradeable

Are we talking young Beal or Beal now? Cause young Beal has been the leading scorer on playoff teams. He wasnt a superstar one but he was on the level of a Booker, young Klay, Jaylen Brown, Ray Allen as a perfect 2 for a contender that could be a 1 for a playoff team in his prime. He didnt get the supermax for nothing. Bane is a 2/3 as you said. His defense now is better but not overwhelmingly better than the young Beal due to his small wingspan. And Beal when he played a lot more off the ball shot it with the best of them, shot 40% from three in three of his first five years. If Bane is better shooter, like defense, the difference is marginal.

Team Hero Grizzlies v Warriors 03/18/2023

He's the second Grizz player to accomplish. Shockingly, Jason Williams was the other. -
Ja will be back Wednesday night, but I am not sure he will start.

Beal is kind of an invisible/forgotten player. He's obviously still very good, but he's not talked about much anymore. Mainly because he's on a team that is not good, and he's already peaked as a player and hasn't made the All-Star game the past couple years. He's set for the next 4 seasons and will make a lot of money. But, Washington will likely not be in contention. On the other hand, Bane is on the rise and plays for a team that is a contender. Beal has earned his payday, but may be considered a hindrance with his large salary. Washington may try to unload him, but at $50-57 million, there may not be any takers.
