In the sense that he's justified why it was 100% necessary to retain him, yes.

Living up to the largest contract signed in NBA history for what you would expect of said player? No. But that's not Mike Conley's problem. The franchise likely could have locked him up for fewer dollars, but it is what it is. We pre-emptively MAXed out Rudy Gay as well when we didn't have to. Just the way this organization seems to do business.

At the end of the day though, I am happy he is a Grizzlie.

Yeah he has earned year 1 of his deal. The first couple of years was never the problem. Its when he is Tony Parker caliber (or worse) towards year 4 or 5 and he is making 30 million plus that's its gone get ugly.

I think Conley has earned almost 1/5th of his contract this season. Considering it's a 5 year contract that is all anyone can ask for so far. How he performs in the playoffs will determine if he under-performed or out-performed his first year of the contract.

Yep, and if the contract's not appropriate, that's the fault of the league, players and agents collectively.

And especially the owners. As in MLB, as soon as someone's willing to overpay, even if there;'s a penalty for it, quite a few teams feel they have to follow.

Won't change until the penalty is something other than money.

Yep -- I'm just hoping he can keep up this production for at least 2 more seasons which is possible. Maybe even 3 seasons. I'll be willing to bite the bullet on that final year then.

if  the Grizz hadn't maxed Conley he could have gone to another team, leaving the Grizz sorely lacking at the most important position on a NBA team. I feel the Grizz made the right decision.

So fear of Conley leaving justifies any contract size in your opinion.

No, but imo, his overall play this season justifies his !st year of his contract.

You can't low ball your best player and risk him leaving

I have high respect for mike conley the player and the person.  He is close to all star calibur in my eyes, but he still has too many nights of "average numbers" for my liking.  I believe some of this is from his injuries, and i thought he played better two years ago before he got his face smashed.  I still think that was the year the grizz should have won the title.  Now it seems he is having injuries keeping him from ever getting into full stride.

No, i don't think he is worth that much money per year.  I think we overpaid, and i get the reasons why we might have done this.  One positive thing is it does send the message around the nba that the grizz WILL spend the money.

In truth, we had mike for a couple years and were severely underpaying him.  So part of me is very happy for mike and i think he is deserving, but i am worried about how his contract will play out over time.

If mike could just stay healthy for a long period of time, i believe his numbers will come up.
