Rubio To Memphis?

Recommended Posts

Playing around with Memphis Slim about the Rubio situation in Minnesota and a trade came up.

Minnesota trades Ricky Rubio to Memphis

Memphis trades Tony Allen (expiring contract), Vince Carter (expiring contract) and Jarrell Martin to Minnesota.

Memphis doesn't resign Tony Douglas and resigns Troy Williams

Sounds crazy I know but consider this:

Memphis would start Conley, Ennis, Parsons, Green and Gasol. Backups would be Rubio, Daniels, Troy Williams, Zach Randolph and Brandon Wright.

Troy Williams would be the backup SF but really the team would be rotating Rubio, Ennis, Daniels and Parsons on the wings with Conley and Rubio rotating in the backcourt. Davis would be the big man backup against teams with two power players inside. Harrison and Baldwin would be available in spot minutes as well. Not to mention Rubio would feel more at home here in Memphis with the Gasol family helping him adjust.

The trade works financially as far as I can tell.

Can't resign Troy Williams this season to the main roster since we waived him.

Thanks. I didn't know that.

Still, I'm sure they can find someone to play SF in the D-League without too much trouble.

Yeah, it's a protection rule to prevent waiving someone on a big contract (big enough that no one will pick them up) and then signing them to a smaller contract.

Doesn't really apply to Troy but I see the wisdom of the rule.
